What We Believe

GOD:  God is our creator and ruler of the universe. One God has eternally existed in three distinct persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. He is Spirit in His nature. He is love in His character. He is neither limited by space or time. He is all knowing and all-powerful. He is greater than His creatures. Therefore we can only know of Him to the extent that He has revealed Himself to us. (Genesis 1:26,27; 2 Corinthians 13:14)

JESUS CHRIST:  We believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God. He has coexisted with the Father throughout eternity. He became a human being through a miraculous birth and accepted human limitations as a man. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered himself as a perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on a cross. He arose from the grave after three days demonstrating his power over sin and death. He later ascended to be with the Father and to intercede on our behalf. It is through the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ that we have salvation from our sins and the gift of eternal life. (John 1:1-5,14; Colossians 2:6,7,9)

THE HOLY SPIRIT:  We believe that the Holy Spirit is also a distinct person, who has coexisted with the Father throughout eternity. He lives within every Christian from the moment of salvation. The Holy Spirit provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right, equipping for service and intercession in prayer.(2 Corinthians 3:17; Romans 8:9-11)

THE BIBLE:  We believe that the Bible is God's written word. The Bible was penned by human authors, who were inspired by the Holy Spirit. It is, therefore, free of error or internal contradiction. We also believe that the Bible is relevant and applicable to our lives. (2 Timothy 3:16,17; 2 Peter 1:21; Hebrews 4:12)

HUMAN BEINGS:  People are created in the image of God and therefore are capable of greatness, but are marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called "sin". Sin separates people from God and is the cause of all that is wrong with man and the world. We possess "the flesh"which is a predisposition to sin and which is awakened when we are mature enough to understand right form wrong. We believe that man has a free will and that, of that free will, has rebelled against God. (Isaiah 59:1,2; Romans 3:23; Gal. 5:19-21; Romans 6:23)

SATAN:  We believe Satan is a real spiritual being; the ultimate personification of evil. He was created by God. Before the creation of the human race he rebelled against the Creator and became the chief antagonist of God and man. He and his army of rebellious angels (demons) continue to work against God's purposes in the world. (2 Corinthians 4:3-4; Revelation 12:10; Ephesians 2:1-2; 6:11-12)

SALVATION:  Jesus Christ is God's solution for our sins. Through him, we can experience God's forgiveness of our sins, receive God's Spirit, and be adopted into God's family forever. We believe that salvation is God's free gift to all who will respond in faith to his wonderful grace. (John 3:16-17)

GOD'S GRACE:  It is only by grace that anyone can have salvation. Nothing man can ever do will cause him to deserve heaven or obligate God for any blessing. (Ephesians 2:8,9)

FAITH:  We must put our faith in Jesus Christ as God's Son and our Savior. Faith is trust in Christ's death and resurrection. (Romans 5:1,2; Colossians 2: 6-8)

REPENTANCE:  Our faith must result in a change of heart and mind. We must decide to turn from a self-directed life, to a Christ-directed life. (Matthew 4:17; Acts 3:19)

CONFESSION:  Our faith must lead us to verbally identify ourselves with Christ by confessing him as our Lord and Savior in the presence of witnesses. To "confess" means to "agree with". When we confess our faith we agree with what Gods says about His Son. (Matthew 10:32,33; Romans 10:9)

BAPTISM:  Our faith must lead us to clothe ourselves with Jesus Christ in baptism. By being immersed in water in Jesus' name we identify ourselves with his death, burial, and resurrection. In baptism the penitent sinner is united by faith with the saving work of Christ at the cross, is thus saved and given the Holy Spirit. We do not consider baptism to be a work performed by the sinner but faith in the finished work of Christ. (Galatians 3:26,27; Matthew 28:19,20; Acts 2:38-41; Acts 8:36-39; Romans 6:1-7)

THE LORD'S SUPPER:  It is our practice to observe the Lord's Supper each Sunday. The bread and cup remind us of the body and blood of Christ shed for our sins on the cross. It is a sharing in the body and blood of the Lord. We exclude no one from the table who considers himself or herself a faithful disciple of Jesus. (Matthew 26:26-29)

ETERNITY:  People were created to exist forever. We will exist either eternally separated from God by sin, or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is Hell. To be eternally in union with God is eternal life. Although one may "fall from grace", we believe that spiritual security and assurance are available to the Christian. (John 14:1-3; Romans 8:17,18; Matthew 10:28; 2 Thessalonians 1:8-10; 1 John 5:13)
